    b) Measurement of the solar fraction from the central solar system and gas consumption of the central heating system in Montserrat building.

Spanish Pilot Site

The Spanish pilot site consists of two social housing buildings in the city of Manresa, with a population of 76.000 inhabitants, located in the geographical centre of Catalonia, at 60 km from Barcelona. The two blocks are composed of 140 dwellings (88+52) and both buildings contain a large underground public parking.
Both buildings are equipped with a centralized system that provides heated water for its individual use both in heating (through wall radiators) and domestic hot water. In Quatre Cantons, though, it is not possible to separate data used on heating and on domestic hot water because the heat energy recorded is unique for both.
Systems for gathering data are significantly different for each building and/or energy carrier. It is summarized in the following table.

 

 

Manual data collection is done by staff from a subcontracted company and the data collected is introduced later onto the server manually as well.
Automatic data collection is done by means of concentrators connected through an Ethernet cable to a router which send data to external server.





Expected results
To influence the behaviour of the tenants being part of the experimental group as to change their energy and water consumption, in comparison with the control group within the same building and period of time.

Partners involved in the pilot site

  • FORUM: Foment de la Rehabilitació Urbana de Manresa, sa. Established in 1994, FORUM works in the urban land management and urban rehabilitation of the Old City  of Manresa. As a result if the urban refurbishment done during the last years, it has become the social housing manager of the municipality. It is responsible for the pilot in Spain, coordinating, implementing and reporting activities related to the site.
  • CIMNE: International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering- Building Energy and Environment Group (BEE). Technical R&D organisation with energy expertise. CIMNE is the Lead Participant (LP) and is responsible of the administrative and financial management and technical coordination. CIMNE is also leader of WP4 (evaluation and analysis)
Methodology & Partecipants
The Spanish pilot site involves 110 dwellings divided into three groups depending on the type of monitoring and services offered:

The basic or first level will be established across 110 trial dwellings during the baseline period and across 66 trial dwellings during the operation period, and consists of gathering data of the thermal energy, cold water and electrical consumption, in a monthly basis.
The second level will be applied to 38 trial dwellings and consists of data gathering in 15 min intervals for overall electric consumption, space heating, DHW and cold water, during the operational phase of the trial.

The third level of monitoring will be applied to 6 trial dwellings, and in addition to the second level, it will provide a sub-metering of 3 electrical lines and the measurement of the indoor temperature and relative humidity, along the operation phase of the trial.

Building Quatre Cantons was occupied in 2007 and 66 of its dwellings are rented. All the rented dwellings are occupied by “social” inhabitants that are below the national threshold to obtain a social dwelling. The most common type of household is that consisting of a couple with children but there is a similar number of dwellings occupied by couples and by singles.

The building Montserrat vas occupied in 2011 and 44 of its dwellings are rented. Tenants are “social” inhabitants as well, mostly people who live alone, followed by couples and finally by families with children.

In both buildings, tenants are mostly unemployed people who are on some sort of social benefit or pension, with an average income of less than 1.300 € per month and family. There is a significant percentage of migrants and the average level of literacy is quite low.

ENCERTICUS energy awareness service
Based on the above mentioned trial levels, householders will be provided by:

  1. Mobile App that will help householders track and understand their energy usage. The app will show the dwelling real-time consumption data, charts comparing  their recent energy use to that of average neighbours or historic consumption profile, and also personalized tips on energy saving. It will be designed as an easy-to-use app, a game to try to engage the interest of the tenants and their families.



  2. Web portal for housing manager and energy coach, to check general consumptions of the building and also individual consumptions per dwelling.
  3. Paper energy report for tenants containing monthly consumption data, charts comparing  their recent energy use to that of average neighbours or historic consumption profile, and also personalized tips on energy saving.
  4. Personal energy coaches to better understand how to reduce energy bills and save money, and general information on energy savings.
